JANUARY 2011 WEB SITE REFRESH

This gives some background information to the refreshed ukrepeaters web site that launched on 1st January 2011.

branding

The domain remains at www.ukrepeater.net but the site will generally be known as ukrepeaters (which trips off the tongue easier!)

vetting information

Amongst a number of changes is the way that vetting data is displayed. It becomes part of the main database and displayed in rows rather than columns.
Following advice taken, the milestones shown have been simplified to date of entry, submission to OFCOM, Date of frequency clearance and NoV issue date. Even if RSGB still gets the micro stage detail like "PU1" and "PU2" keeping the stages as simple as possible should be easier to understand. Explanation of the stages shown more graphically.

regional summary page

Each region continues to have a dedicated page with contact form, sites list and map, but a new link to a special Summary page now shows all repeaters with abnormal status PLUS vetting items, so regional and specialist managers can see at a glance what is outstanding to enable them to focus better on the needs of the Keepers in their area.

improved search

There are improved search facilities with separate database and document searching. The document search gives a more effective search of previous committee minutes and other reference material, while the database search allows for searching various repeater data fields for example keeper callsign, frequency, channel and mode.

repeater pages

Consideration had been given to ditching the individual repeater pages, but several external sites link to them, so they have been revamped and still include the coverage map.
The individual repeater pages have a standard format and include links to repeater group web sites where provided.
Repeater group web sites now more clearly seen as clickable links from most listings, so hopefully encourgage groups to keep them updated!

status display

The status page now shows only non-green entries (though the full list is still available on a separate page)
This should focus better on what is off or impaired, and where off times have been entered indicate how long they have been off.
A common colour code of red callsign to denote GMSK (GB7) callsigns should help to differentiate between analogue and digital entries in most repeater lists and search results.

new features

The rolling news items are database entries and have start and end dates.
Amongst other things is a RSS news feed and a Twitter page (both have actually been on trial for a few weeks previously as some have discovered!)

external data

We are delighted to have the Grampian Repeater Group continue to supply useful SatNav POI files, and this will be clearly linked from the Home Page.

I went looking for the latest dstar repeaters in the London area, of which I know there are several (MB6IHF, MB6INL for example; for the Olympics) but none of them were to be found listed.

When a list is said to be the latest, as it did for dstar, please endure that it is accurate, and also please give the date in the same sentence. e.g. This list is current as of the 2nd January 2012.

Hi
I am sure there must be a download button to get the full list into XL or csv for easy keying entry into modern programmable rigs, like the Yaesu 8900 etc.
I could not find it so is it available?

Please correct :

70CM RB0 433.0000 434.6000

to

70CM RB00 433.0000 434.6000

small change, but a clever one :D

Pleased to see the 2m map/list page now appears correctly in IE Print Preview. I shall take a printed copy on my travels!

The site is much easier to navigate than of old. Like the new layout.

Unfortunately the POI file on Grampian Repeater Group is not available - going to Grampian RG home page gives: "The GRG Website has suffered a corrupted database and file system. Several hours would be required to restore the site from backups. The site was intended for members but has never been used, IF there is genuine interest the site could be restored when time allows."

The web site "contact" section should have a contact for the system admin or web site maintainer.

Bug:

http://www.ukrepeater.net/channels/ru66.htm

430.825Mhz - click "GB3ZB" output 145.7375 .....

Whilst the new site looks ok in both Firefox and Internet Explorer, there are problems with pages when you try to print them (Especially it seems in IE).

Opening the http://www.ukrepeater.net/2m.htm page in IE and selecting Print Pre-view shows some rather interesting effects as you change the page scaling with what appears to be part of the Google Map flowing over to page 2 on top of the table of information.

Pasting the URL for this 2m page into my favoured HTML validator shows a rather large number of problems with the XHTML coding, that might just explain why IE has trouble formatting the page for printing.

From America:-

" H.R. 607 "Broadband for First Responders Act of 2011" threatens part of 70cm band
The Society of Broadcast Engineers issued a legislative alert to its members this week. A Bill introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives on February 10, states that within 10 years after the Act is adopted, the entirety of the paired spectrum between 420-440 MHz and 450-470 MHz must be auctioned by the FCC for commercial use. This includes the Broadcast Auxilliary Services (BAS) allocation at 450-451 MHz and 455-456 MHz. There is no proposed replacement spectrum for displaced BAS licensees. Of interest to hams would be that it also includes the 430-440 Mhz portion of the 70cm ham band often used for satelite and weak signal work.
The spectrum targeted includes the 450-451 and 455-456 mhz sections which are used heavily by commercial radio broadcasters for remote pick-ups, as well as by many other civilian and defense users.
The Bill was introduced by Representative Peter King, (R-NY) who serves as Chair of the House Homeland Security Committee. The "Broadband for First Responders Act of 2011," has ten cosponsors as of now, including members of both political parties. "

Perhaps the UK is thinking along similar lines...eventually!

BTW Great site, cannot see how to start new thread so apologies for dumping on this one.

New user here and just found this site.

All looks good and simple to use, however is there any chance of adding a 'download the list(spreadsheet)' facility for the repeater list?

It would make life a lot easier if I could go through a spreadsheet and remove the repeaters I'm never going to need before sitting down and programming them into my radio.

I like the site's design
No doubt a lot of time and effort has been spent in making easy to use and look so good.

A pedantic PS -
My one reservation is that the spelling of "analog" is incorrect in British English.

Certainly a worthwhile improvement.

I find of interest the extra information supplied on the "operational status" page, particularly that of now including the actual out of service downtime (where shown) of each repeater.

A big thanks for all your time and effort, a job most well done.

All the very best for the New Year.

Nice job, but, the repeater list clicking on a callsign just brings
up a load of programming info, not
the rptr info, a few other lists are
also like this. Happy 2011

Like the new site although I've not visited all of it yet.

It seems cleaner and easier to navigate. I particularly like the ease of use of the Google Earth repeater finder!

Well worth your efforts. Thanks.
